Panchakarma — literally "five actions" — is the cornerstone of classical Ayurvedic medicine. Where a modern juice cleanse works on the surface, Panchakarma is designed to draw deep-seated toxins, or ama, out of the tissues and clear the channels through which the body heals itself.
The philosophy
In Ayurveda, illness begins when ama accumulates and the three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — fall out of balance. Panchakarma restores that balance through a carefully sequenced programme of preparation, elimination and rejuvenation, always guided by a qualified physician.
The three phases
1. Purvakarma (preparation). The body is softened with warm herbal-oil massage (abhyanga) and herbal steam so that toxins begin to loosen and move toward the digestive tract.
2. Pradhanakarma (the main cleanse). This is the elimination phase, tailored entirely to your constitution — never one-size-fits-all.
3. Paschatkarma (rejuvenation). A gentle return: a sattvic diet, restorative herbs and rest that let the newly cleared system rebuild its strength.
What it feels like
